Best Series by the Decade
There used to be some overarching “this is why I liked stuff from the 00s” rant here. That was before I decided to turn this page into a list of all of my “by the year” lists. Why limit this shit to just the 00s? That just isn’t fair to years that come later. We can’t leave them behind.
But yeah, the stuff I tend to like is what most people like to deem “weird.” In a year where everyone was proclaiming the likes of Usagi Drop and Steins;Gate to be the best of the best, my favorite anime TV series was a comedy about demon-worshiping. That’s pretty much my trend: I go for the off-the-wall, “obscure” shit that most people ignore. It ain’t deliberate– I’m no contrary hipster who digs on something just because it’s something everyone doesn’t like. I might come off like that at times, but all of my love is purely non-ironic. Irony ain’t love, it’s just self-loathing gussied up as praise. When I claim that Space Adventure Cobra, in all of its ridiculous space opera illogical glory, is the best anime series of all time, I mean that shit. When I say Rio: Rainbow Gate is borderline genius, I mean that shit.

If you haven’t seen it yet, I’d recommend watching Seirei no Moribito and The Twelve Kingdoms. Both are full-fledged fantasy series with amazing female protagonists. Obscure gems if I have to say it myself.
I have watched Seirei no Moribito and was extremely impressed. I enjoyed they way the show developed the characters and included the legend in the rice planting song. I also love the Shaman Torogai. I ended up being slightly disappointed with the lead character as she turned into more of a mother figure as the series progressed. She could have been slightly more morally ambiguous and perhaps been a more effective lead.

Landon, thanks for this list. To date, I’ve seen only 8, and tried Genshiken. Two thumbs up, two big toes up! I may spring for the manga.
