Are anime animators being forced to work as much as rumored, and the cause of the overworked animators is due to limited animation production techniques?

Because most Japanese anime studios are usually small with only a few dozen artists working on an anime series, investing in full animation will take a lot of time and effort and risk big losses. In addition, the blame on anime production techniques has made the number of anime production more and more overloaded, which makes the workers overloaded.

So, what is the cause? The cause of this problem is a combination of specific cultural and social characteristics of Japan and the animation industry. Firstly, it is Japanese working culture. Japanese working culture must be said to be quite harsh.

The Japanese are sometimes too perfectionist and meticulous at work. This can be frustrating and can slow down your progress. In the anime production stage, there will be an animation director who supervises and checks the frames so that the character movement is natural and the character is not off-model, which means it is not deformed or too different from Original design.

Therefore, specifically in this case, we see that the reason why artists have to work overtime is not entirely because of animation production techniques, but because of the over-carefulness of the director.

A Chinese director used to share the experience when working with a Japanese anime studio. He also pointed out that the inflexible working style is a big deal with the Japanese anime industry.

Because of their over carefulness, it takes a lot of time in some first episodes. After that, they have no time for the last parts of the anime, which forces them to do quickly and reduce the qualification. For some anime series, the first episodes were of very good quality, but the later the animation quality dropped the worse, because there was no time to draw properly. Another thing is to follow the process, to make anime in the order of the determined steps. Therefore, when one stage is behind schedule, it can directly affect the subsequent stages which greatly affect the anime project.

Is the anime artist’s salary so low that this industry collapses?

The first mistake when it comes to artists’ salaries is that they think that because the industry is unprofitable, it is not profitable to paint artists and think everyone has the same low salary. The whole industry is growing steadily in the past 7 years, up to 108% / year. That is, the industry is still steadily making a profit, not in a loss like some pages give false information.

Secondly, artists are also divided according to different levels, not everyone has the same salary. At this point, you must know that in order to create a scene in an anime, artists often have to draw about 10 frames per second.

It is divided into two types of frames, one is “key frames” – the key frames, these frames will determine the nature of motion in that scene. The second is “in-between frames“, the extra frames for the required number of frames and extra motion. Can you imagine just like people sketched out the sketches before, we just trace and add more details to be more vivid.

Key frames play a more important role, so they are often drawn by experienced animators. In-between frames are only considered as outsourcing work, so they can only be taken by novice artists, part-time artists, or those from countries with cheap labor.

These are in-between frames that are drawn in a sketchy manner to be submitted for quick showing that the quality of in-between animators varies greatly from key animators. And that leads to the problem of salaries of these two types of painters quite differently.

And for those who play a larger role in an anime project such as image directors, animators, main directors, producers, the salary will increase rapidly.

Producer, who manages the entire anime project, will have a salary of up to over $ 6000 / month. And the people with the highest income in the whole industry are seiyuu (voice actors) with extremely high salaries, maybe up to $ 60000 / month! Because in famous seiyuu it can be considered similar to idols or A-list actors. They not only participate in voice acting for the anime but they also participate in promotional events for the anime that are even organized. my own music show.
